I have seen a quote today on social media: The best a father can teach his children is showing them how much he loves his wife. I think this counts both ways. Show your children how much you love and appreciate your partner and they will do the same when they have a partner. Which brings me to the last recommendation for Valentine´s Day, but more something to think about than a Valentine´s present idea.

Reducing food waste

Today we are getting back to the word reduce by reducing food waste. Last week I strayed a bit and explained why you should encourage wildlife into your garden. This was because of squirrel appreciation day. Did I mention that before? I think, I forgot. Ups…

Reducing food waste to start protecting our environment and to save money. We are wasting 1.3 billion tonnes of food every year. It´s time we tackle this! Learn how to either reading the post clicking the image or by listening to the podcast. Green living essential steps. #ecofriendlyliving #greenliving #greenlivingtips

How to Reduce Food Waste in Your Home

Did you know that worldwide we waste about 1.3 billion tonnes of food every year?!?

Start reducing your food waste for the good of our environment and for your own pocket as you will be saving money at the same time. There are many ways you can cut down on food waste that happens in your home. Here are a few things to think about:

Think Twice about What You Buy

When you are at the grocery store, don’t just pick up whatever looks good. If something is jumping out at you, put it on your grocery list and decide whether you will actually buy it the next time you are in the store. This will save money immediately, and will be a good reminder that a person often doesn’t even really want or use many of the items they buy.

Plus, never go shopping hungry! You will only buy much more food that won´t get eaten. When you go shopping not being hungry, then your grocery list will come in handy. I know that I forget half of what I wanted to buy when I go shopping full up and forget my list…

Make Meal Plans

At the beginning of each week or on the weekend, create meal plans for you and your family. Make a grocery list based off these meals plans. This will keep you focused on purchasing necessities rather than frivolous items.

Now, I never liked meal plans because my days are always different. Some days I might have a lot of time to cook and other days I don´t, but I never know beforehand. A way to get around this problem: plan 2 meals using roughly the same ingredients. As example: plan to make lasagna and if you then don´t have the time, then just make spaghetti Bolognese. This works really well for me.

If you haven´t found a good meal planner yet, I can only recommend the one I am using. Here is the link to the free download.

Use a Shopping List

I know, I mentioned the shopping list before and it is vital to reducing food waste. Make a shopping list and take it to the store with you. Stick to this list at all times. Do not deviate or be tempted by purchases that are last-minute temptations. If it’s not on the list, it’s a “no.”

Cook a Little Less Than Needed

Often we cook more than our family or friends will end up eating when we serve them a meal. We are afraid it will look tacky if people are still hungry and the food is gone. This is a quick road to major food waste, as people eat more than they need if there is excessive food.

There is nothing wrong with having just enough to feed everyone, and then moving on to the next course. This way, everyone leaves a bit of room in their stomachs, saving indigestion and future leftovers that may never get pulled out of the fridge and eaten.

Eat Leftovers at Another Meal

If you do end up with leftovers, then by all means, eat them. In your meal planning, schedule in at least two meals a week for leftovers. Plan them to happen at separate times during the week so that all leftovers will be used and enjoyed at some point.

Wanting to start a greener life, but feeling overwhelmed? Then my E-book “Ease into Green Living” is the right fit for you! Special offer: 30 minute call with me where you can ask me anything you want 🙂

I sometimes even cook certain things like pasta or potatoes more to be able to make a nice leftover dish the next day…

Buy Smaller Portions

Often fresh fruits and vegetables get purchased and then go bad after sitting too long in the fridge. To solve this problem, buy less of the items that spoil quickly. You may love oranges, but instead of buying a whole bag, buy half a bag. Or instead of buying five grapefruits, buy two. You might have to get groceries more often, but if you are scheduling two trips to the grocery store per week this shouldn’t be a problem.

Don´t bulk buy!

I know many other blogs recommend you to bulk buy and shops are encouraging it by offering 3 for 2 deals. But, only buy those deals and only bulk buy if you will really use it all! Otherwise you are producing more instead of reducing food waste.

Reducing food waste is one of the biggest ways we can save money in our homes. It doesn’t take a lot of planning to save a reasonable amount of money. By looking through this list, you are sure to find at least a few ways you can personally cut down on your food waste. This will save you a lot of money, and enables you to look after our environment at the same time.

I hope I have given you some good ideas on reducing food waste. And if you start, let me know how you are getting on 🙂

Find a new hobby in the National Hobby Month

It´s national Hobby Month and I thought it would be a good idea to write a post about finding a new hobby. Plus, why it is important to find a hobby.

Find a new hobby in National Hobby Month! This post gives you some ideas on hobbies to start, including blogs specialised in those hobbies. What better time to start a new hobby than Hobby Month?

Please note that this post contains affiliate links. If you purchase anything using them, I may receive a small commission at NO extra cost to you. Hobbies are good for our mental health. We feel like we have achieved something which makes us happy.

They also keep our brain fit and engaged. Unless we are not fully into the hobby anymore because it has become boring and/or repetitive. If this happens, we either have to up the difficulty or find a different hobby which then challenges us again.

In this post I want to introduce you to some ideas and hopefully you find a new hobby to start here. Together with the ideas I will give you examples of blogs for each hobby. I am not affiliated with any of the blogs, they are suggestions of blogs that I either follow myself and/or see as valuable for this matter.

Every product sold = 1 pound of trash picked up. Shop sustainable clothing, accessories, and camp accessories and help us clean the world.

Read books

There are so many different types of books you could choose from. Fiction, biographies, history, languages, travel, romantic…

Reading keeps your brain engaged and you can find a little escape from every day life in books. You don´t have to read a lot, but I am sure that there is a type of book you could be interested in.

Even if you don´t want to read just for yourself, then read to your kids. I love our bedtime stories where my son reads a bit to me and I then read to him. We have found a really good page to find new books to read for kids. Have a look at Scholastic yourself!

For adults, I recommend having a look at Rae´s blog Thrifty Bibliophile where you can find ideas on what to read. If you are a bit like me, you would like to know what the book is about and Rae is getting me interested in books I wouldn´t have looked at otherwise.

Crochet and Knitting

Both have been one of the first hobbies I have learned from my mum. It´s a long time ago though, so I should start again. I remember making pot holders first, then scarfs, table cloths… It is absolutely satisfying to see the end result and I always found it relaxing. My last “crochet experiment” took me forever as I was out of practice, but I am happy with my doormat from plastic bags.

A very good blog for crochet and knitting I can only recommend is Knit & Crochet Blog. You can find endless ideas and extremely good, understandable instructions on Tuula´s blog. Tuula has got her own YouTube Channel as well. You can check it out here.

Quilling

I only recently discovered “Quilling”. To be honest, I had seen finished crafts, but never thought about it any further.

This is a hobby I want to start this year, so it seems I did find a new hobby just by writing this post! It looks fun, but at the same time a little challenging as it seems a bit fiddly work at times. But I like keeping my fingers busy and concentrating on what I am doing. Plus, I will have a result to be proud of after. I hope 🙂

If you want to learn more about quilling, you should visit Meredith´s blog The Papery Craftery.

Fitness as hobbies to start

There are soooo many options here. You can start jogging or plogging, which is a new trend where you run and pick up litter at the same time. This is my favourite when it comes to running.

I don´t really like competitive sports, so for me it is keeping fit I can do at home or yoga, tai chi… But if you like company or team sports, then why not join a local club or gym?

One blog I find my fitness ideas from is Emma & Rose. I like it, because you can get the whole health package as it includes healthy recipes as well as fitness tips and challenges.

Up to yet I still have to find a blog teaching me tai chi. If you know one, let me know either via email or in the comments 🙂

DIY & Crafts

Now, obviously you know that I don´t only blog about green living, but also about DIY projects. Many of those are recycling or upcycling projects. Just have a look through in the menu under DIY, if you are not familiar with my projects yet.

But there are many other blogs related to DIY and crafts I follow and like reading. I will give you a few here where you can find inspiration if you want to start DIY or crafting.

One showing you a lot of different DIY´s, including how to make a pom-pom rug, is Hungarican Journey. I love going through Andrea´s posts to find new ideas to try out myself. The pom-pom rug I will try as well, but I should hurry up to have it done before the winter ends.

Another blog I like to visit is A Little Knick A Little Knack. You can find all sorts of DIY´s from vinyl tips, to stenciling all the way to decorating cupcakes with royal icing. I have tried royal icing before, but I am not great at it…

And lastly I want to remind everyone that hobbies can be all different things by giving you two examples. One of a more unusual hobby:

Planning themed road trips

Now, this is a thing that wouldn´t get a hobby of mine, but it doesn´t have to. For this I found Missy´s blog Party Through The USA giving me lot´s of great ideas on how to entertain our son on a road trip. I will need this in summer, as we booked a holiday 6 hours drive away… My son will enjoy the dinosaur road trip. And I think, we will too.

Add some serenity and happiness in your life

We all need to add happiness and serenity in our life and even though this is not really termed as a hobby, it will be very good for getting into the right mindset to start a new hobby.

A blog I like to read and listen to the podcast is The Joyous Family. You will find all different lifestyle related posts and a lot of fun.

There are many more options to find a new hobby, like painting & drawing, photography, calligraphy, gardening, bird watching, stamp collecting… Unfortunately I don´t know a blog I could recommend you for those, so they didn´t get a paragraph in this post.

I hope I could help you find a new hobby. And, as I said before, feel free to let me know any other good blog to check out for hobbies.

Why you should encourage wildlife into your garden

Today I want to explain to you why you should encourage wildlife into your garden or onto your balcony. Wildlife and insects are often thought of as a nuisance, but some of them can be extremely beneficial to you and your garden. Plus, more and more animals are put onto the list of endangered species every day. So help protecting them by inviting them into your garden! Did you know, as an example, that bees are endangered now? Imagine what we would be without them! If you want to learn more about bees, I recommend you having a look on Carolina Honeybees.

Today I want to explain to you why you should encourage wildlife into your garden or onto your balcony. Help your garden, your health and endangered species! Going green and looking after our environment is easier and more beneficial than you think. Eco-friendly lifestyle

Educate yourself so you can know the difference between good and bad visitors and be equipped to encourage their existence.

Do Your Research

Learn about why you would even want to encourage wildlife and insects into your garden in the first place to not only benefit them but benefit yourself as well. When you hear about some, you might feel defensive of your treasured garden and want to keep all “unwanted” life forms away from it. But did you know that some insects help you to keep away the real “bad guys” and protect your garden from being ravaged by them? This kind of biological control is so much better for your garden, your own health, and the health of the Earth than the toxic chemicals that too many gardeners rely on.

Good and Bad Wildlife

Yes, some insects and wildlife are keen on destroying all your hard work as quickly as they can. However, there are plenty of beneficial bugs around as well. Adult ladybugs devour mites and aphids, saving your plant life from destruction. Spiders eat insects and therefore help to get rid of garden pests. Most garden spiders do not go into houses and are not poisonous. So you don’t need to worry about allowing them to take control of your garden.

Ground beetles feast on snails, slugs and many other garden enemies. Many birds can contribute to your garden by indulging in a variety of harmful insects. Toads and lizards also decrease the population of the insects that no gardener wants around.

Why would anyone want to saturate their garden and future meals with chemicals that are harmful to the human body and the Earth, when one can simply rely on nature to keep the harmful insect population in check?

Today I want to explain to you why you should encourage wildlife into your garden or onto your balcony. Help your garden, your health and endangered species! Going green and looking after our environment is easier and more beneficial than you think. Eco-friendly lifestyle

Encourage Pollinating Insects into your garden

Some wildlife and insects are beneficial because they have an appetite for the insects that can destroy your garden and put to waste all your hard work. There are other qualities held by certain helpful wildlife and insect populations as well, such as the pollination efforts made by insects including butterflies, moths, flies, wasps and bees. Without these helpful insects, your garden will not be in a healthy state for long.

Create a Hospitable Environment for Your Little Guests

Some insects such as bees are somewhat under threat. These hard workers are essential to the proper balance of nature. With all the pesticides and other environmental factors at play, however, their very lives and existence are at risk.

You can do your part to help them by creating an environment in your garden that will attract and encourage their survival. Say no to chemical insecticides, and choose to use natural method to discourage pests and weeds. Plant nectar and pollen-rich plants to feed your new friends. You can take measures such as planting for every season so that the wildlife and insects that you want to thrive will have a place to call home. And this way they will also have food to keep them alive.

Wanting to start a greener life, but feeling overwhelmed? Then my E-book “Ease into Green Living” is the right fit for you! Special offer: 30 minute call with me where you can ask me anything you want 🙂

It is not very difficult to encourage helpful insects and garden-friendly wildlife in your garden. All it takes is a little knowledge and a few simple and inexpensive changes.

Next month I will show you how to encourage wildlife into your garden and onto your balcony.

I hope you have learned a few things on why you should encourage wildlife into your garden. And are ready to help protect our precious wildlife? Are you already doing something to attract wildlife into your garden?

Today I want to explain to you why you should encourage wildlife into your garden or onto your balcony. Help your garden, your health and endangered species! Going green and looking after our environment is easier and more beneficial than you think. Eco-friendly lifestyle
