Eco-friendly toys you can buy this Christmas

This holiday season, parents will flock to stores to buy all types of gifts for their children. We’ve all seen the videos of parents fighting over the hottest new figurine or doll. This year, shirk the plastic type toys and instead invest in some wooden toys and other eco-friendly toys. I will give you several options for eco-friendly toys you can buy this Christmas.

In this post I give you ideas on eco-friendly toys you can buy this Christmas! And you can use those not only for X-mas. Eco-friendly toys for any ocasion! From wooden toys to subscription boxes. Protect our environment by gifting thoughtful and environmental friendly!

Please note that this post contains affiliate links. If you purchase anything using them, I may receive a small commission at NO extra cost to you. I only provide links to products of which I think they are useful to you and I try to link to eco-friendly products at the same time. For more information please read my disclosure & privacy policy.

Wooden toys

Wooden toys were the first type of toys kids knew. Dads would whittle a piece of wood to create toys in the shapes of animals, wooden dolls, puppets on strings, and toy cars. Kids would play for hours with these toys. Once the kids outgrew them, they could be passed on to younger kids.

Wooden toys have not lost their luster or durability but they have been passed over for the more colorful plastic types that talk and move. When kids are young, the one thing they have is their imagination. Wooden toys inspire the use of the imagination during play.

Wooden toys are also environmentally friendly. Many are used in their natural wooden state. Paints used on eco-friendly toys are non-toxic and safe for kids. You can argue about trees getting cut down for the production of those toys, but many companies plant at least 2 new trees for each they cut down. So, if you look for companies doing that, there is no problem.

Why wood instead of plastic?

When other toys are broken or the kids get tired of them, they are thrown away. Each year something new will replace the old favorite and they will no longer like it as much. In a landfill, those toys just sit and take up space.

Even worse: lots of toys that are thrown away still have their batteries inside. Toys filled with harmful substances still contain them when they are disposed of. These chemicals can be released into the ground as the housings break down. This poses a potential hazard.

When wooden toys are broken, they can be fixed. If you know someone good with their hands, they can fix it for you. The point is that you don’t have to throw them away. Wooden toys you can pass down from generation to generation.

They maintain their shape and if scratched, the imperfection can be sanded out. Wooden toys hold together better than modern toys created on an assembly line. Small parts that break off of new toys can choke a young child.

If wooden toys are old and no longer usable, they can be disposed of. Because they are made of natural wood, you can chop them up and use them in compost. Colored wooden toys can’t be used for that, but maybe someone can  refurbish and donate them to local charitable organizations.

Introduce kids to wooden toys when they are young. Puzzles come in wooden and paper shapes instead of plastic. Most wooden toys have rounded edges so they are safer to play with and handle. Even if they gnaw on wood it won’t hurt them.

Choose wooden toys for the young’uns. They are environmentally friendly, safe for young children, durable, and repairable if they are damaged.

Other eco-friendly toys you can buy this Christmas

Subscription boxes give a lasting fun experience, not only on Christmas. There are many choices depending on the interests of your child. I will give you a few options here which I really like.

More eco-friendly options

At Natural Collection you can find many eco-friendly toys for babies, kids and toddlers. Apart from wooden toys, they sell as well plastic toys made from recycled plastic, so you can buy those without feeling guilty.

Then books are always a great present as they last longer than just a day. The most eco-friendly way here would be to buy used books or go to a book bank where you can swap books. Don´t have one in the neighbourhood? Why not start one?

If you are looking for eco-friendly finger paint and dough for your kids, then you can find those at EarthEasy along with many other options. My son is out of the age for those, but I am sure he will love the power house kit 🙂

Last I want to recommend instead of eco-friendly toys as Christmas present: giving experiences! A special day out to somewhere they like or would like to go to in form of a voucher will make kids happy and gives them something to look forward to. I know this is not for very small children, but from a certain age on they will love this gift. A day pony riding, a visit to a bigger park, museum… You know your kids best and I am sure you find the right idea. My son wants to try archery and there is a place not too far away we could go.

I hope you have found lots of ideas of eco-friendly toys you can buy this Christmas. Let me know which ones you are getting 🙂

People Power

Try to use tools that don’t use gas or electricity when you can. Hand tools and your own bare hands are better for the environment and your garden than gas-powered tools that add carbon dioxide to the environment. Plus, it keeps you fit. Both of my grandmothers used to work a lot in their own gardens and didn´t use any pesticides. The benefits where a lot of fresh air and exercise. One of them is 101 and the other 96 years old. I am not saying, that this alone kept them young for longer, but it definitely helped 🙂

Rich Soil

Your most important ingredient for gardening is using the right soil for the plants that you want to grow. Do not use synthetic ingredients in your soil. Plants take CO2 from the air and turn it into starches and sugar. This combines with other types of carbon which then turns into a plant that people and animals eat. When you buy or seed your plants, make sure you know which type of soil you have and what type they need. There are many natural ways to provide the right soil for your plants.

Composting Equipment for your climate-friendly garden

The one thing you really want to do to practice climate-friendly gardening is to compost. To accomplish this, you simply need an aerator, air, water, the sun, and organic material. You may need a hand cultivator or fork, a screener, and something to collect kitchen waste in to help, like this compost bin or this really decorative kitchen waste collector.

Electric Mower

A gas-powered mower puts too much carbon dioxide into the air and should not be used by the climate-friendly gardener. Therefore, look for electric mowers because they are healthier for the environment.

Push Mower

If you really want to impact the environment positively, a manual push mower will work best. It’s good for the grass too because it cuts it differently than other types of mowers, with less damage.
Or use a scythe. I know it is more complicated, but it is definitely the most eco-friendly way to cut your lawn. When I was a kid our neighbour used to cut his this way and I used to find it fascinating to watch.

These were the gardening tools for your climate-friendly garden in the sense of proper tools. Read on to find out how to further make your garden more climate-friendly.

Organic Fertilizer

Try to avoid synthetic fertilizer and use only organic fertilizers that aren’t fuel based. They should have the right compounds for your needs based on the tests you perform on your planting areas. You can use manure from cows and from chickens.
If your soil and plants need calcium, there is one easy way to provide it: next time you boil eggs, let the water cool down and then mix it with the water for your plants.

Chickens

Chickens are great for gardening as their manure is a good source of nitrogen for your compost pile. They also work great as they can clear up to 50 square feet of land per chicken within six weeks. This is, if you have the space. Otherwise you can get the manure of somebody who has chickens.

Plant Cover Crops

Also, never leave your garden soil empty. Always replace crops with a crop cover of some kind to keep the soil healthy and manage erosion, weeds, and diseases. Plant grains, grasses, and legumes make good cover crops.

Trees and Shrubs

Control water runoff, plant damage, erosion, and even cool down a hot spot in your yard with the right trees and shrubs. Look for native plants for the best results that most fit your needs.

Wildlife

Make your garden animal friendly and inviting. Insects will help you pollinate, birds, bats and lizards will help keep unwanted insects under control. Use attracting the right animals as natural replacement for pesticides.
In my next post I will explain a bit more how you can attract the right kind of wildlife to your garden.

Using these tools and your own bare hands, you can create a fruitful garden that gives you all the food you and your family need, while improving the environment instead of ruining it. In fact, if everyone used these same tools and practices in their gardening and yard care, we could help slow down climate change damage.

Why you should use coconut oil on your skin

Why you should use coconut oil on your skin. Instead of using all those chemicals, coconut oil gives you not only healthy looking skin, it actually gives you healthy skin! Ideal natural skin care

What can coconut oil do for your skin?

I love coconut oil and use it for many things. Not only for cooking!

Starting an eco-friendly lifestyle, I was looking into reducing chemicals and going more natural in my product choices. That´s when I found the miracle coconut oil. I use it as well in my shower gel I make myself and love the way it makes my whole body feel. Plus, it is one of the main ingredients in my mosquito repelling deodorant. I am still working on a toothpaste I am happy with using coconut oil… Once I found one, I will let you know. 🙂

Coconut oil has one of the richest sources of saturated fat, with about 90% of its calories in saturated fat. It also has a plentiful amount of uses for your skin, all of which will help to preserve the glow of your natural skin.

Why you should use coconut oil on your skin instead of lotion

Commercial moisturizers make your skin feel nourished because of the water, but as soon as that water evaporates, your skin becomes dry and dehydrated. Plus, many of these moisturizers contain petroleum-based ingredients that will, in the long run, suffocate your skin. Not to mention all the other chemicals bought moisturizers can contain.

However, use coconut oil on your skin to provide you with a deeper cleansing. It will help to strengthen your primary tissues. It also removes any excess dead cells on the skin’s surface which can make your skin appear rough and scaly.

Coconut oil can solve plenty of skin issues. I use it to soothe bug bites, help with any rashes, get rid of flaky skin, easily remove any eye makeup, soften my wrinkles, protect me from sun damage, and to keep my tan in place for longer.

Lastly, it can heal skin faster. This is because coconut oil has medium chain fatty acids. It will quickly absorb into the skin providing nutrition and energy. This process provides your skin with all the energy that it will need to heal and maintain itself.

Benefits of coconut oil

* Coconut oil has been proven to have antibacterial and antifungal properties.

* It can help cure your acne; it kills the bacteria causing the blemishes in the skin.

* Coconut oil used as a deodorant removes any body odor much better than any deodorant I have ever used.

* Mixed with a few drops of bergamot essential oil, coconut oil can help to heal chapped lips and cold sores.

* Coconut oil is natural – there are no chemicals in it.

* The Vitamin E found in coconut oil is known to help soothe psoriasis and eczema.

* It contains three fatty acids: capric acid, lauric acid, and caprylic acid. All three of these acids can kill candida, which is a common cause of fungal infections in the skin.

* Coconut oil can be used as a diaper cream acting as a barrier to help prevent diaper rash.

* Coconut oil helps lighten age spots.

* It helps prevent stretch marks when pregnant.

* When used consistently on skin, it can get rid of cellulite.

* It can help to improve the itch of chicken pox and poison ivy.

* Coconut oil, when placed on cuticles, can help nails to grow.

For best results:

For your face, apply as you would with any other moisturizer. Only use a small amount; use about twice a week. Wipe off after two minutes. If irritation occurs then don´t use coconut oil on your skin.

Instead of using coconut oil on the rest of my body, I have made my own shower gel. You can read more about it and the benefits of the other ingredients here.

10 Good Reasons To Start Going Green

I always thought that you need to be rich to be able to protect our environment… Now I know, that exactly the opposite is the case: everyone can and should start protecting our environment! That´s why today I want to give you 10 good reasons to start going green.

In this post I give you 10 good reasons to start going green. Protecting our environment is for everyone, poor & rich. Do it for the future of our planet!

Please note that this post contains affiliate links. If you purchase anything using them, I may receive a small commission at NO extra cost to you. I only provide links to products of which I think they are useful to you and I try to link to eco-friendly products at the same time. For more information please read my disclosure & privacy policy.

Here I don´t want to say, that you have to go to extremes, but if everyone starts doing a bit, we will notice a big change. This get´s me to reason number 1:

1) We only have ONE earth!

Astronomers are searching the universe for earth-like planets, but they haven´t found another earth yet… And even if they should, it would be too far away to go there once we have used up all natural resources here.

And exactly there lays the problem. We are using up our natural resources fast. To protect those and the future of humankind on this planet, we should start using more recycled and sustainable materials.

2) Going green saves money!

When you start a more eco-friendly life, you will start saving water and energy. This in exchange will already save you money. Even without solar panels, there is a lot you can do at home to reduce your energy bills. I explain more about this in 25 ways to protect the environment on a budget and as well in my FREE pdf 15 Tips on starting a greener life.

There are many more ways you can save money by going green. When you start growing your own herbs and vegetables, walk more, shop more conscious you will notice the difference.

3) Do it for your children, not for yourself

We will most likely not see the consequences of our efforts, but our children and their´s will. Continuing the way we are going at the moment, our children or their children will not have a planet to live on anymore.

Remember those Sci-Fi films where only the rich and powerful get to live on a different planet or a better place? Everyone else get´s left behind to fend for themselves, if they can. Well, I don´t think that society is going to change that much in those years until we have turned earth uninhabitable to take everyone. And then, go and destroy another planet?

Let´s give our kids a bright and healthy future!

4) Eco-friendly materials last longer and are better for your health

Eco-friendly materials are made without any toxins, harmful chemicals and are often from recycled materials. Therefore they are much better for your health and help keeping our resources.

They are more expensive, but they last up to 5 times longer than cheaper materials. I have asked in our local paint warehouse to get an explanation of the differences between eco-friendly and normal paint. Apart from what I already mentioned here I have been given an example on duration. If a normal paint lasts 1 year, say, then the ecofriendly paint lasts at least 3, in comparison, if both are applied properly. This means at a bit less than double the price, I still save money going for the eco-friendly.

In addition going for eco-friendly and fair trade products helps reducing toxins and chemicals in air and water, as those are not used. Which in return is good for everyone´s health.

Buying second-hand products for the home is also eco-friendly as it reduces waste and doesn´t require more resources.

In this post I give you 10 good reasons to start going green. Protecting our environment is for everyone, poor & rich. Do it for the future of our planet!

5) Better Air

By living more eco-friendly you will better the air quality in your home through plants/herbs. Outside the air quality will get better as well, because you will reduce the use of your car, reduce your carbon footprint and other´s (fabrics, shops, buying local produce so less transport, etc.). You will also make sure that there are enough plants, trees, bushes outside of your home to better air quality.

Apart from those, the air quality in your home will be better, because you will use less chemical products that effect the air you breathe.

Up to yet, we have talked about 5 good reasons to start going green. Are you interested in learning more first hand? Take part in the live training starting December 6th “A Quick Start Guide To Creating An Eco-friendly Home Without Overwhelm And Frustration”. It will only be live once! Only $ 147

6) Going green improves your health and skin

When you go green, you will allow less chemical products onto your skin and into your body. This will massively improve your health and your skin will also look a lot healthier.

Since I´ve started using my DIY deodorant, I smell less sweaty and I know that I am reducing my chances to get breast cancer. My skin feels sooo much better and doesn´t need any extra cream since I made my own shower gel.

You also start eating healthier as you are making sure that you get food free from toxins and other chemicals that could get into your body.

And you will walk more which obviously is good for your health too. 🙂

7) You get more conscious about what you buy

You will start reading the labels more and more. Becoming more critical of certain ingredients. And you also will become a smarter shopper as you will not fall for misleading advertisements.

Going green means reducing waste, so you will start thinking twice before you buy something you might not use or need. Food waste will be more or less avoided as well.

Shopping for more local products, you will help the local economy, reduce the carbon footprint and you will have the peace of mind knowing where it is from. Plus, you can make some valuable connections.

8) You yourself become a better person

As I already said at the beginning: some good reasons to start going green are not for you. It will be for the benefit of future generations, of our planet and of everything living on it. This alone makes you a better person already!

You will start feeling calmer and happier as you are under less influence of chemicals and feel healthier as well.

Through shopping more local products, you will have more interaction with others which is good for the soul.

Reducing waste and what you buy, you will not be so money and consume orientated. Giving items you don´t need anymore to charities will also make you feel very good within yourself.

9) Help local economy grow

I have already mentioned it several times throughout the post. Once you start living more eco-friendly, you start shopping local products and therefore support local business. Supporting local business grows local economy and helps reducing our carbon footprint.

It as well means that you feel more independent.

It gives you a direct influence as well in knowing where and how products have been produced. Knowing this, you might be able to make some changes asking for eco-friendlier ways or products.

This get´s me to the last of our 10 good reasons to start going green:

10) Supply & Demand

We all have heard of the principle of supply and demand. Once more and more people, including you, start demanding eco-friendly and fair trade products, companies will change their range accordingly. The more people buy those products, the more affordable they get.

I have seen this happening with the electric cars. When they first came out beginning of this century, there was not much demand as there were not many options to actually charge a car. Being something new and eco-friendly they were also pretty expensive. For a while those cars seem to have disappeared, but rising awareness of our environment has brought them back onto the market. Now you have got the facilities to charge those cars and the demand has risen and the price is much more affordable.

There are so many more good reasons to start going green, but I leave it at that for today.

I hope, you have enjoyed this post and have started thinking about going green a bit more.
